About Us

Empowering Women in STEM Since 2005

Mums in Science was founded in 2005 by Dr. Shara Cohen, who recognized the pressing need for support among mothers working in STEM fields. At the time, Dr. Cohen had two young children and witnessed many of her female peers leaving science due to family constraints and a lack of support. Determined to make a difference, she established Mums in Science—an international network dedicated to providing support, information, and tools to help individuals manage their careers while navigating the challenges of life, including parenting.

In 2024, in recognition of her commitment to women in STEM and her other contributions, Dr. Shara Cohen received the British Empire Medal in the New Year's Honours List.

Our Mission

We aim to empower individuals by offering resources and a supportive community that fosters professional growth while balancing personal life. By addressing the unique challenges faced by parents in STEM careers, we strive to promote inclusivity and retain talented professionals in the scientific community.

An Inclusive Community

Mums in Science is an inclusive organization, and our talks are attended by people from all walks of life around the world. We do not restrict our events to those working in STEM or by gender—everyone is welcome. Whether you're a parent, a professional, or someone interested in science, you'll find a place in our community.

Looking to the Future: The Proposed Women in STEM Network

As we look to the future, we are excited to announce the development of a new Women in STEM Network. This initiative aims to further support and connect women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. By creating a dedicated platform, we hope to address the ongoing challenges faced by women in STEM and provide additional resources to help them succeed.
